Video: Benefits of Home Winterization

COLUMBUS, Miss.(WCBI)—The winter temperatures can get to a bitter low, taking a toll not just on our bodies but our homes.

“I bought this house in 76 and thus far I’ve never had a busted pipe,”said Home Winterizer Chance Laws.

Meet Chance Laws, his philosophy is repairing busted pipes cost more than some insulation and a roll of duct tape.

” I’m not much of a handy man but I worked it out last year where I insulated the faucet and and unhooked the hoses and everything worked out fine. So I plan to use the same strategy again this year,”said Laws.

Winterizing your home might sound like a lot of work but 4 County Electric’s Manager Jon Turner says it’s as simple as observing.

“Caulking around windows, doors to putting weather stripping around windows and doors anywhere you see a gap. It’s looking for those penetrations…those pluming penetrations around the house under your sink pluming comes through maybe around your water heater and cocking and foaming around those penetrations. Any where you see a whole or anywhere air could come in or out.. those are the places where you will get the most bang for your buck,”4 County Electric Jon Turner.

For some winter equals a pretty penny but Turner says that doesn’t always have to be the case.

“When you turn that heater on your using a whole lot more energy or electricity or gas than you were when that heater wasn’t on. So it’s not about the rate changes it’s you using more power at your house. So anything you can do to lower that usage means a lower bill,”Military Hardware Owner Brad Perkerson.

” We’ve been busy the past two days.”

Brad Perkerson owns Military Hardware he says though winter is still 3 weeks away people can never start preparing soon enough.

“Right now we are fine cause it hasn’t gotten cold enough yet but if it ever stays below 32 degrees several night that’s when were going to have some problems. Go ahead and start wrapping everything as much as you can,”said Perkerson.

Several Electric providers including 4-County Electric offers an online monitoring option for customers to pinpoint daily power usage.
