Video: Bulldogs To Rely Heavily On Weatherspoon

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — Mississippi State men’s head basketball coach Ben Howland said the 2016 team will be the youngest he’s ever coached.

The Bulldogs have nine freshman listed on the roster, and seven are scholarship.

Howland will rely on two starters from a year ago to lead the young guys, that being senior guard I.J. Ready and sophomore guard Quinndary Weatherspoon.

Weatherspoon is the player Howland is looking to lead the young team, especially after “Q” is coming off a solid freshman season where he averaged 12 points-per-game, while shooting around 45% from the field, and almost 40% from three.

“Do everything, Q,” Howland said when asked what he wants from the sophomore this year.

“Lead us in everything. Guard the other team’s best player, be our leading rebounder, be our best offensive player in terms of making plays for others, shooting the ball, getting to the foul line.”

“…playing even harder than I did last year,” Weatherspoon said about his outlook for the season.

“My jump shot is better than it was last year. Just me competing harder. I’ll try to fight through any pain, if it’s not broke, I’m trying to play. Just me playing hard for the team is the biggest thing.”

Weatherspoon and the Bulldogs will open up the season on November 4th against Delta State in Starkville.
