VIDEO: Choctaw County Wildfire Under Control

CHOCTAW COUNTY, Miss.(WCBI)—Thursday night a fire brushed across 374 acres of land in Choctaw County.

The Mississippi Forestry Commission responded to the wildfire around six p-m and was able to have it mostly contained by one a-m and

The Forestry Commission Crews stayed over night to monitor the flame. The Mississippi Forestry Commission sees nearly 3500 wild fires a year.

” March is one of our high months for fire. Because it’s spring time everyone’s fixin’ to go out clear the yards up clean the gardens up and do some burning. Once you get it lit up then the fire gets away from you. That’s the number one cause of wild fire is escape debris burn,”said Mississippi Forestry Commission Bill Kitchings.

Just like in Thursday nights burning, Weather can play a large role in the birth, growth and death of a wildfire.

” Even out here you can see when fire fighters were fighting this fire they could put a fire lane in it could blow across the fire lane come back and they got to jump and they have to come back and re-plow the fire lane and get the jump under control,”said Kitchings.

Rain has been in the Mississippi forecast the last few months but Kitching says that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to start a fire.

” We’ve had rain and we are greening up a little bit but as you can see here things aren’t quite to that safe point yet, even though things are greening up stil use extreme caution,”said Kitchings.

Kitchings says though they are coming to the end of fire season he asks the public to please be careful.

” If you have to do burning keep yo a garden hose handy, keep you a rake handy, keep you a shovel handy . Things you can use to put out that fire if things get away from you,”said Kitchings.

The normal fire season starts in October and ends in Mid April.
