Video: Columbus Man Found Guilty of Capital Murder

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – A Columbus man will spend the rest of his life in prison after being found guilty of capital murder.

Jurors took about two hours to reach the verdict.

District Attorney Scott Colom says Derrick Bankhead came up with the plan to rob Eddie Bankhead.

The Bankhead men were cousins.

Eddie Bankhead was shot at his College Street home in July 2011.

Three other people have been charged in the deadly armed robbery.

Colom says he wants those men to stand trial as quickly as possible.

“Under our law, you have to try each individual person separately. And each individual person in the criminal justice process might have different things going on, which causes their trial to be delayed, and so Derrick Bankhead was the only one that I can really try at this time.”>

Bankhead was found competent to stand trial, but based on his mental capacity was not eligible for the death penalty.
