Video: Columbus Police Chief Responds To The Weekend Shooting Downtown

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Police are still investigating an early Sunday morning shooting outside a downtown bar in Columbus.

Gunfire erupted after midnight on 5th Street South between the Princess Theater and the Fred’s store.

Bullets and casings were recovered from the scene.

Five vehicles were hit during the shooting and two of them were occupied. No one was injured.

Police Chief Oscar Lewis says his officers were patrolling 5th Street just prior to the shooting.

“We were in that area, but we’ll definitely step up the time that officers spend out there, or maybe even dedicate a person specifically for that, but there are several other changes that are being put in place right now, to address the issues that we’re having at the Princess and the downtown area right now.”

The shooting will be addressed at Tuesday night’s city council meeting.
