VIDEO: Community Remembers Legendary Negro League Baseball Player

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI)- A legendary Negro League Baseball player from Pontotoc has been laid to rest today.

Hundreds of members of Tupelo’s community gathered to pay their last respects to “Bob” Buchanan, who passed away on June 9th at North Mississippi medical center.

He reportedly was born on February 29th, 1918,

He was a legendary gospel singer who played baseball for Grand Rapids in the Negro minor leagues before making the decision to return to Mississippi.

Family spokesman Clarence Parks says he ultimately decided to pick family over baseball.

Parks says besides his immediate family Buchanan leaves behind 76 grandchildren, 140 great grandchildren, several great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
