Video: Construction Soon To Begin On MS Highway 12

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – The most traveled stretch of road in Starkville will be getting a makeover starting next month.

Last night, the board of aldermen authorized the mayor to sign the Memorandum of Understanding.

It’s an agreement between Starkville and the Mississippi Department of Transportation.

The agreement states the plans for installation of a concrete median on Highway 12, from near MS Highway 25, to near Blackjack Road in Oktibehha County, and also for signal improvements.

Over 100 businesses and properties line Highway 12, and many of those owners are worried about the unknown.

“We don’t know what that’s going to do to traffic flow. We don’t know what it’s going to do to the ability of people to actually come in, and visit our businesses. Is it going to hinder business? Is it going to bolster business? We don’t know,” says Backstage Music owner, Allen McBroom.

MDOT is using safety money for the project.

The city will be responsible for maintaining the islands once they’re put.

It’s expected to be completed next fall.
