COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)-Some Columbus High School students are spending their summer vacation in the hospital. They are perfectly healthy, they are simply taking advantage of a unique partnership between Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle and MedStat Air Ambulance Service. A Medstat air ambulance is helping to take future healthcare workers to new heights they once only dreamed about. Getting a summer crash course in patient care is just what the doctor ordered.

“They’ll get to talk to doctors and lab technicians and nurses and paramedics. And it just shows them all the different opportunities that they have if they do enter the medical field,” said Ashely Dale, Staff Development Nurse, Baptist.

Students from Columbus High School and Immanuel Center For Christian Education are getting a behind-the -scenes look at the day-to-day duties of all aspects of the healthcare profession. What they learn today, they could encounter tomorrow.

“Exposing these children to this helps them to see another aspect of healthcare in which they may consider,” said Gus Joseph, Flight Nurse.

Air ambulance service is one of the latest tools the potential healthcare professionals could use, when disaster strikes and seconds count.

“And this being a very needed aspect of healthcare in this region, MedStat Air has invested in the community to provide critical care specialty air transport,” said Joseph.

The crash course is for one week, each student was recommended by their school counselor and/or teacher.
