Video: Damage but no Injuries in Itawamba County After Straight-Line Winds

ITAWAMBA COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) –Strong winds cause damage to a small strip shopping center and destroy part of a dock at a marina in Itawamba County.

It was around 6:30 Tuesday evening when straight line winds crumpled the metal awning of this dock at Midway Marina.

First responders and volunteers had to crawl through the twisted metal to reach several families who live on boats at the marina throughout the year.

Luckily, no one was hurt at the marina and the owner of Fulton Discount Grocery also escaped injury when that same storm system peeled the roof off the building where his store is located.

Ray Higginbottom had sent all of his employees home, and he was in the back storage room when the winds hit.

“I really didn’t know what to think, thought it was my time for a minute there, I was low crawling, I got to the back door, raised it up, to see what was going on , I still had my son on the phone, I was telling him see what they was going to do, all the excitement going on.”

“Fortunately we were safe, but as Jeff Foxworthy said, for a few moments there it was pandelerium. I was in the Mantachie  area, we had deputies stationed from north end of the county to the south end and we were monitoring it as it came through.”

Sheriff Dickinson says there have been only a few power outages in the Mount Pleasant Community. Also, the Marina residents have found hotels for the evening.
