STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — Every 20 seconds a child dies from a preventable disease worldwide because they weren’t immunized.

Today is World Health Day.

The Emerson Family Resource Center in Starkville hosted a learning fair for the “A Shot at Life” campaign.

The global movement hopes to prevent millions of childhood deaths worldwide. One point five million children die each year from diseases like chicken pox and polio. After recent measles outbreaks in the United States, organizers say immunization is key to saving lives.

The World Health Organization reports that from 2000 to 2012, there’s been a 78% drop in measles deaths worldwide due to immunization.
