STARKVILLE, Miss.(WCBI)—The spot light is on Breast cancer this month.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the united states.

One out of every eight women will obtain breast cancer during their life time.

Pageants bring the light, stage and the beauty of a contestant to the fore front. Many think it’s just about carrying a crown, but for Miss MSU her title means more.
Meet Molly May, She is Miss Mississippi State University 2016 and has been competing in the Miss America Organization her whole life, a number of reasons lead her to the pageant stage but she says one sticks out the most.

” One of my favorite aspects of the Miss America organization is the plat form aspect and all that means is you pick a charity that is near and dear to your heart that you devote your time to to raising funds and awareness throughout your year of service.SO mine is breast cancer awareness and I chose it because my mom is a breast cancer survivor she was diagnosed when I was 8 years old and I watched her fight for 3 years and undergo 2 single mastectomies and it was very hard but she got through it she is a twelve year survivor,” said Miss MSU Molly May.

Caring for her mother during that time, May says, was tough but the real battle was still in front of her.

” It got a whole lot more personal when I turned nineteen, I had a double mastectomy it was a long recovery period about six months but um here I am after reconstruction and physical therapy and I’m doing fine,”said May.

May says her experience tough her a lot but the number one piece of advice she would give is be educated.

“The biggest thing you need to know it your family history you just need to talk talk to your family find out what has happened in the past to both your male and female counter parts because it’s not gender specific as well,”said May.

Through her plat form, Molly has made it her mission to reach out to other survivors.

“Personally I have my own initiative called bald is beautiful and I make head scarves and homemade wraps for breast cancer victims who are going to chemotherapy to wear and my goal is to donate 10 scarves to every breast cancer treatment facility in Mississippi,”said May.
