VIDEO: Here’s What Some Locals Are Looking Forward To In The First 2016 Presidential Debate

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – The first 2016 Presidential Debate rolls out Monday night in New York.

Although the debate is miles away from Mississippi, thousands of Mississippians will be witnessing the first woman presidential candidate face off with the first non-traditional presidential candidate from their homes.

One local voter compares the first debate to a sporting match.

“The first few plays in a football game. The offense trying to figure out the defense, the defense trying to figure out the offense. I’m looking at this being a set the tone kind of play, and the thing will be who can make the first oops, the first gotcha moment, then the other person will then reflect on that argument, and try to jump on it,” says voter, Stan McCrary.

Honesty and discussion of current and relevant issues are what McCrary is hoping to see.

“I’m looking at Hillary to try to bring out the side of Trump we saw at the primaries. I’m looking at Trump trying to come across as presidential, and trying to trip up Hillary when it comes to things that are still bothering her, for example, emails.”

Every minute counts, especially since there’s only ninety to debate everything from America’s direction to its security.

“If Trump has been going like he’s going, there’s going to be a bunch of fighting going on, like it’s going to be hard,” says Columbus resident, Bailey Swedenburg.

Plans on uniting the nation is an answer voter Eddie Herge Jr. will be listening for, rather than the candidates answering why they’re better than the other.

“Not so much of them, you know, tearing down each other, but uplifting each other. I’m looking forward to a great, that they’ll just get in there, and make this country a great country, but be able to just do some things that haven’t been done before.”

Actions speak louder than words. That’s why voters are hoping to see candidates’ words turn into something more than empty promises.

“I just need to hear what both of them are going to say during the debate, and see the changes they make with some issues that have come up since they’ve been running,” says voter, Sharon Jones.
