Video: IRS Tax Refund Delays

COLUMBUS,Miss(WCBI)—If you’re looking forward to that large income tax refund , It could take you longer than you think to receive it.

The Internal Revenue Service has informed tax payers, that for some, their 2017 income tax refunds will be delayed.

Tax season begins January 1st and ends on filing day – April 15th.

With any luck, Many taxpayers get their refunds within 21 days after filing.

But as I learned today, that, for our safety, it’s going to take a few of us a little longer than that to see some cash.

The IRS’s is putting a hold on refunds for taxpayers who claim earned income and child tax credits.

” Because of earned income credit and the child tax credit there are extra precautions to check the individual to make sure that the client’s privacy is being protected and as well as they are not being over taxed for something,”said Owner Mid-South Income Tax Lydia Seroux.

If you are single or the head of a household with two children, you can qualify for earned income tax credits – IF your yearly wages are less than $44,648. A married couple, filing together qualifies at $50,198.

The IRS is taking extra time to make sure your refund comes to you. They are hoping the additional time will cut down on identity theft and tax fraud.

But Owner of Mid-South Income Tax and Booking Service Lydia Seroux says the changes are actually alarming people.

“A lot of people especially clients who are receiving their E.I.C. they get a larger refund and they count on this money for one to help cope with some of the expense they had at Christmas. I have some clients that that helps pay for medical bills for their children The clients Depend on this money,”said Seroux.

Columbus Resident Mary Spencer appreciates the extra precautions .

“Well I’ve actually been the victim of identity theft. Unfortunately, it’s just a fact of our time. We have to be very careful about how we put ourselves out their and anything that has to be done to protect ones resources needs to happen. I think it’s going to be very inconvenient for people who depend on that and that’s unfortunate but it’s just a sign of our time,”said Columbus Resident Mary Spencer.

“It normally takes about 10 to 21 days to process the return and get that money back to the client but because of these guidelines that we are having to follow. It could be probably the end of February before refunds are actually received.”

The IRS is projecting more than 153 million tax returns to be filed in 2017. The IRS will begin accepting returns January 23.
