Video: Marker Raised to Recognize Tupelo’s Green Street Business District

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) –Tupelo is recognizing the one-time business hub of its African-American community.

A marker in Green Street Grove Park highlights what was known as the Green Street Business District.

That area included restaurants, clubs, stores and churches in the city’s Black community during segregation and the Civil Rights struggle.

Those who lived in the area at that time say it’s especially important for young people in Tupelo.

“To know the history and know what, who was the foundation of this community and things that were done back years ago, it gives them a motivation to know what to look forward to as they grow.”

“I’m very proud that we have come to the point we can recognize the work and service of those who went on before us, a lot of times we forget about the struggles they had, we forget about how they really moved to change this world for our benefit.”

That marker is the twelfth in the program for the Tupelo Convention and Visitors Bureau.
