COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)- Mississippi Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney is now in Hattiesburg accessing the damage following this weekend’s tornado.

The E-F4 tornado ripped through Sunday afternoon. Nearly 80 people were injured and more than 570 homes destroyed.

Joseph Ammerman from the Mississippi Insurance Department says the Commissioner is working tirelessly to help victims find their insurance adjusters and file damage claims.

“A lot of people in Mississippi don’t know but the Insurance Commissioner is also the State’s Fire Marshal, so we’re not new to this unfortunately. We have a standard procedure for when things like this happen. Then we get more into the Insurance Commissioner phase of it where we have a mobile command center that goes down we have consumer representatives that go down and you do whatever you can to help people recover,” says Ammerman.

Around 10 Deputy Fire Marshals are on the ground surveying the damage.

Search and rescue teams are also coordinating with MEMA and local authorities to help victims.
