TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — Food banks across the area will have their pantries stocked after a campaign by the United Way. The United Way of Northeast Mississippi held its first “Day of Caring” today at the BancorpSouth Arena. The theme of the event was “Unite to End Hunger. “Several companies created food sculptures for the event. All of the food used in the sculptures was donated to food pantries. It was a way to highlight the need for donations for the area food pantries that serve needy families throughout the region.

“One in five Mississippians is food insecure and that’s across all ages, racial, socioeconomic, households with children are much worse, up to one in three children in our area is at risk of going hungry so it’s always a big issue no matter what the economy is doing, there is still a lot of need out there,” said Robin Matkin, United Way of Northeast Mississippi.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Mississippi donated $5,000 to each of the 8 food banks in the area, for a total of $40,000.
