VIDEO: Oktibbeha County And Starkville Smoke Detector Give Away

OKTIBBEHA COUNTY, Miss.(WCBI)—Oktibbeha County and Starkville Fire and Rescue Departments work to make the community feel safe.

Tuesday, as a part of a state wide initiative, The State Fire Marshall partnered with Vision 2020, a non profit organization to distribute 204 smoke detectors in the county and city.

These smoke detectors are unique because they have a 10 year  battery life.  Residents interested in a detector must call the station to participate in the give-away.

To qualify residents must live in a personally owned home. The fire fighters will come to the home to install the detectors.

“In the past 10 years Oktibbeha County has had 21 fire deaths out of those 21 fire deaths 15 of them had no working smoke alarms.
A Smoke Alarm will save your life, said Chief Deputy Fire Marshall Ricky Davis.

Davis goes on to say any smoke alarm must be changed after 10 years.
The Starkville Fire Department is expecting to host a detector drive the first week of May.
