LAMAR COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A longtime Lamar County, Alabama restaurant is celebrating 60 years of business.

The Polar Bar in Sulligent has been serving up ice cream and milk shakes to friends young and old since 1953. Today an anniversary celebration was held to recognize the oldest restaurant in Lamar County. Many longtime customers stopped by for lunch and to share memories of the Polar Bar. It started as a small place, but over the years the building expanded and so did the menu.

“We just had four items when we opened up. A nickel cone of cream and a dime cone, and a 15 cent milk shake and a 25 cent milk shake. And that’s all we had. But, it went over mighty good,” says the  original owner, Frank Buckley.

That ice cream is still famous today, but customers we spoke with also recommended the chicken at the Polar Bar.
