VIDEO: The Recent Dry Spell is Having An Impact On Lawn Care

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)-We’ve had no significant rainfall in the area in nearly five weeks.

This four month drought is creating lingering effects on roads, ponds, and also lawn care.

“Plants will tend to go dormant early under stress like heat or drought and that’s actually a survival mechanism for the plant,” said John May, landscape designer for Smith Landscaping.

May said workers have been seeing dried up lawns from the impact of the drought.

“In areas where lawns aren’t irrigated, certainly, they’re getting hammered and it just makes them more susceptible to disease and insect problems.”

The landscapers recommend watering your lawn to keep it healthy, and that’s one reason workers at Smith Landscaping are still making house house calls and mowing lawns once a week.

“A lot of our properties are irrigated, and so the drought doesn’t affect them as much as long as they’re keeping the tap on,” said May.

Some companies are seeing customers cancel service during the drought and during the winter months.

However, there are ways to still keep your yard healthy.

“Proper watering, proper fertilization are very important,” May explained. “Preferably watering plants in the morning, plants and lawns need about an inch of water a week.”

May also said because so many business have irrigation systems and sprinklers, his business has not been impacted.
