Video: School District Still Looking at Budget Options

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Columbus leaders are looking to see how they can fund the school district next fiscal year.

The district held a public hearing Thursday night for residents, discussing the possibility of a tax increase.

School officials laid out all of the details on how they’ll handle the $34 million ongoing debt.

They wanted to make sure the public was aware nothing is set in stone.

The Columbus mayor and city councilmen were also on-hand, saying they’re against a tax hike.

Some residents also added they don’t want to see an increase, but the children should still stay a top priority.

“The only time people really come out is when it hurts their pocketbook, and we need to be interested in more than these numbers up here. We need to invest in these kids,” said one resident.

A vote will be held July 8.
