Video: Second Amendment Tax Holiday

LOUISVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – Another Mississippi sales tax weekend is right around the corner, but this time, it’s not for school supplies, instead it’s aiming at hunters and other outdoor types.

The Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday was passed back in the 2014 Legislative Session, and it’s something that just a few states have.

If you can shoot it, draw it, or float it, you can get it with no sales tax starting Friday until Sunday.

Customers don’t pay taxes on guns, ammo, or hunting supplies during the Mississippi Second Amendment Weekend.

“I’m a gun owner. I hunt, so yes, it would save me a few dollars if I decide to buy a new gun,” says Captain Edward Hunt of the Louisville Police Department.

How many dollars does it save?

“We have some ammo in here that’s as high as you know, $50 dollars a box, so you’re looking at a $3 and a half dollars savings on that, so you can save a good bit of money if you’re needing to buy all of your supplies at one time. You can save a good bit of money this weekend,” says Western Auto Store Manager, Dwayne Barrett.

If a gun costs $1,179 dollars, then without tax, you’re looking at saving almost $200 dollars.

“A lot of families come in, they’ll have sons and daughters that want to get into hunting, and they use this weekend to come in and get those hunting riffles, and scopes, ammo, and things like that to get them outfitted, and while they’re here, they’ll go ahead and outfit themselves for the year,” says Barrett.

Barrett says hunting and fishing is a big industry for the state, and the tax free holiday is a win for both customers and stores.

“We get a lot of benefits out of it. We really do and you know, it’s a tax free thing for customers, and like I said, the state helps us in different ways because of it.”

Last year, around 150 to 200 shoppers came to scope out the deals, and this go around, they’re expecting more.

“This year with it being election year, and the way it is, it’s probably going to be a little bigger than it typically has been, so we’re hoping the political climate helps a lot,” says Barrett.

Some items that won’t be tax free include hunting accessories like gun racks, game calls, and deer feed.
