Video: The Starkville Neighborhood Market Project Gets Shot Down, Again

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – The debate appears to be over  about a Walmart store coming to Starkville.

The Starkville Board of Aldermen voted down the measure of the Starkville Neighborhood Market Project.

It would have brought the store to the east side of town where there’s no grocery store.

Walmart was demanding a TIF to come in, which would have been a $1.3 million dollar tax increment.

One alderman who opposed the project, motioned to remove it from the agenda.

There was a three to three vote leaving it at a tie, and since Mayor Parker Wiseman is out of town, Vice Mayor Roy A. Perkins broke the tie, voting down the measure.

Alderwoman Lisa Wynn says she doesn’t see the project going forward right now.

“I have worked on this for many, many months. We made some adjustments to it tonight, the other members that were opposed to this did not know that we had made that adjustment, in terms of the money that would be provided for the TIF, so when they chose to move this from the agenda, they didn’t get a chance to hear that, so it’s sad and unfortunate.”

Many people came out to tonight’s meeting in support of the project and were visibly disappointed.

This was the second meeting for the proposal to not be approved.
