VIDEO: Strong Winds Leaves Behind Significant Damage

CALHOUN COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)-Strong winds ripped through Calhoun County on Thursday, leaving serious damage.

Cinder blocks were scattered all throughout Kenneth Alexander’s farm.

They’re pieces of a sweet potato barn that high winds destroyed, leaving most of the building exposed.

“I’ve never seen winds quite blow that hard before, it was just terrible winds,” said Kenneth Alexander, owner of Alexander’s Farm.

The winds roared through Calhoun County about 5:30 Thursday morning. The long time farmer never imagined his well built building being taken down, so quickly.

“Well I just couldn’t believe how strong the winds was to blow a block building wall just flat away,” said Alexander.

Even Vardaman Police Chief Kenneth Scott couldn’t escape the damage.

“All of a sudden it was just a real loud noise, just like an explosion type noise,” said Vardaman Police Chief Kenneth Scott. “Of course, we thought it was just the wind, we didn’t know we had any damage or nothing until the sun come up.”

When the sun finally did come up, Scott said he couldn’t believe what he saw.

“When daylight started rising, that’s when we noticed that part of our roof on the front of the house have been completely destroyed,” Scott explained.

Even though his home needed repairing, like any good public servant, Scott put on his uniform and went to help others.

“It’s very hard,” the police described. “You have to choose, in which it is my job, I had to leave my family this morning to go and take care of the community, and sometimes that’s a hard thing to do, but that’s my job I have to do it.”

While there was damaged scattered throughout the county, many refuse to let Mother Nature get the best of them.

“It’s going to be a pretty big mess to clean up but nothing we can’t handle,” said Alexander.

There was also damaged reported in Chickasaw County.

However, there were no injuries reported in the viewing area from the strong winds.
