VIDEO: The Success Of The MSU Women’s Basketball Team Brings A New Level Of Excitement To Fans

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)- The Mississippi State women’s basketball team is having one of the most successful seasons in program history.

The Lady Bulldogs have been ranked in the top 10 for a majority of the season.

The team is bringing a new level of excitement to the university.

They’re playing a brand of basketball that’s giving fans something to cheer about.

Crowds are packing the Hump, and fans tell WCBI so far, this season has truly been unforgettable.

“I love our women’s basketball team, first off I’m very proud of our team,” said Kiara Blackwell, who’s a fan of the women’s basketball team. “I look at people and say hey, that’s my team, I go to Mississippi State, my team is like number one or number two, we’re the best we’re great.”

“Just from like having classes with some of them and just hear how they talk, like going into the off-season they was like they’re going to have a real good year this year,” said Michael Story, who attends a lot of the women’s games. “We got some bad girls on the team.”

The team is currently ranked second in the coach’s poll.

They have 27 wins on the season, which one win shy of the school record, and if they capture a W on Sunday, they’ll have a share of the conference title.

“When girls play it’s just outstanding to me, like I love to see when women can do what a man can do,” said Blackwell.

“The girls are very physical which is fun to watch, and just to see them our muscle and I’ll play everyone is very exciting,” said Kody Schexnayder, who’s been cheering on the Lady Bulldogs all season.

However the excitement around the team hasn’t always been this high, just ask Martha Phillips.

“I remember when used to come especially one Sunday afternoon we were sitting here at half time and counted 64 people in the stands,” said Phillips, long time fan of MSU women’s basketball.

Phillips and her sons have been faithful fans of the Lady Bulldogs for over two decades now.

“Well we’ve always enjoyed them,” she said. “It was special Coach Fannon to let us come to practice, the practices were open. The girls were like big sisters to my son’s, they were a little like four and seven.”

Phillips said cheering on the Lady Bulldogs this season has been an incredible ride, and she’s happy to finally see the women’s basketball team reach this level of success.

“I’m very happy for these young ladies but also I hope all of the other lady from the past realize that it’s their win,” she expressed. “Everyone has all of them because they all work hard for the years to get to where we are.”

This Sunday will be Senior Day for the Lady Bulldogs as they take on the University of Tennessee. Tip off is set for 4 P.M.
