TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – A Tupelo Church wanted to show its appreciation for the city’s public servants.

Lakeview Baptist Church hosted a Boots and Barbeque event for local policemen, firemen and EMTs.

Church members gave officers a shoeshine – the boots part of the event – and then a barbeque feast.

Pastor Robert Garland says the church wanted to hold this event in light of the fatal shooting of an officer and the severe wounding of another during a December bank robbery.

“After that had happened, after the tragedy on December 23, we wanted to take the opportunity to thank the firemen and policemen and public servants and just let them know that care about them, we love them, we pray for them and we appreciate what they do for us,” Garland said.

The fire department also showed its appreciation by letting children from the church examine their fire engine.
