Video: A Video Showcasing Safety For MSU Students And Staff

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – Mississippi State has a plan in place in case danger strikes, and they’re sharing it with students and staff.

It’s a safety strategy video the university put together to demonstrate what to do if bad weather, violent acts, or any other campus emergency happens.

College campuses are known to be some of the safest places across the country, but they still have to be prepared in case something happens making it not so safe.

This grows out of the president’s directive to make improvements in training and communications, and looks for the campus safety. This video takes those initiatives, and also focuses on our three sort of code words for students safety,” says Mississippi State Chief Communications Officer and Director of Public Affairs, Sid Salter.

Avoid. Deny. Defend. Words to remember if an active shooter situation occurs. Last year, there were a few scary moments on campus.

“As our student body and everyone affiliated with the university learned last year, it’s a little late in the process once a problem develops to learn what to do, how to do, when to do, and so it’s just to everyone’s advantage to avail yourself of this material,” says Salter.

Mississippi State University student Brandye Sheriff says better safe than sorry.

“It’s very important because you never know what’s going to happen. It can happen any day, any where, and you might be somewhere in a situation that you know you’re going to be at, so I feel like you should be aware and go watch the video.”

It only takes 3 1/2 minutes to watch, and provides a semester full of reassurance to parents, students, and faculty. A visual reminder that there’s a plan in place.

“Last semester, a lot of professors were really hitting on alright if this happens, this is what we’re going to do, so I thought that was really cool, but then now demonstrating to the student in a matter that they’re seeing every day, Twitter, Facebook, and a media fashion, that’s really awesome because a lot more students are into that and are going to, you’re going to get a lot more visual when you see that,” says Mississippi State student, Logan Reeves.

The video can be found on Mississippi State’s social media accounts, and it was created by the university’s television center.
