Video: Winston Jr. Deputy Camp

LOUISVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – A law enforcement officer has many duties and this week some Winston County kids are learning what it takes to wear the badge.

The sheriff’s department is hosting its first Jr. Deputy camp this week.

Campers are hearing from conservation officers, highway patrolmen and emergency responders about their jobs, along with some safety tips.

Deputies are also helping the kids learn how to march, to do physical training and to sing a cadence.

“Learning how to march. The left, right is super fun. We learned a bunch of the songs, crazy songs, just over the top songs,” said camper Stella Williamson.

“They’re learning what jobs they do in the community and functions they serve, and they’re understanding those guys are out there for them…not to cause them harm or throw them in jail because they didn’t eat their supper or something along those lines,” said Sheriff Jason Pugh.

The camp wraps up Friday with a graduation ceremony.

The sheriff feels confident there will be another camp next year.
