COLUMBUS, Miss. – (WCBI) Wednesday kicked off the month long 150th Civil War anniversary observance at the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library. Six MUW students spent months digging through archives from all across the mid-south. They uncovered some little known correspondence between slaves and slave holders.

“You hear that all relationships between the slave and the owner are the same, but what I found disagrees. I found letters with slaves writing to their owners stating that they are worried or that they haven’t gone to the Yankees yet because they want to negotiate,” said MUW student Christian Frian.

“There are people that had grievances against the federal government but once the war started and once they found out what the war was really like, most of them changed their mind,” said MUW student Charles Griffith.

The library is also hosting the traveling exhibit “Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant Saving and Changing the United States.”
