TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – The annual trailblazers event is held to honor Mississippians for their hard work and contributions to diversity.

This year three deserving residents will receive recognition at a reception and awards ceremony held Saturday at the BancorpSouth Conference Center.

William Heard, Linda Gholston and former state Rep. Robert Clark will be this year’s honorees.

William Heard will be honored as the Tupelo Trailblazer of the Year at this year’s awards ceremony. He is a quadriplegic and works to help those with disabilities adapt to their surroundings and become more independent.

Linda Gholston will receive the Mississippi Trailblazer of the Year award on Saturday. She has been the director of Sanctuary Hospice House for the past nine years. Gholston has helped nearly 3,000 needy people throughout her tenure. She plans to retire this summer.

Robert Clark will be receiving the Rep. Leonard Morris Award for Public Service and Integrity along with the Rev. Robert Jamison Lifetime Achievement Award. Clark was the first African-American elected to the Mississippi Legislature in 1967. He retired from politics in 2003 after holding the position of House speaker pro-tempore for 11 years.
