4-Lane Highway 6 Could Open in a Year

TUPELO, MISS., Thursday, June 6, 2013— According to Northern Transportation Commissioner Mike Tagert, a major highway project in north Mississippi will soon connect the Pontotoc and Tupelo communities with new four-lane roads. This paving project will relocate SR 6 from SR 342 in Pontotoc County to U.S. 45 just south of Tupelo in Lee County.

The project also includes the chemical stabilization of the subgrade and sub-base, asphalt paving, and permanent traffic striping and signage.

“This project is vital for improving freight routes in north Mississippi and will make it easier for motorists to travel in between the Pontotoc and Tupelo communities,” said Northern Transportation Commissioner Mike Tagert. “When complete, this new route will decrease the amount of large trucks on the area’s smaller, two-lane roads and will provide a safer route for all motorists.”

This project was let in April 2012 and has a projected completion date of June 2014. The contractor is APAC-Mississippi, Inc. and has a contract amount of $26,063,700.
