$42,000 Confiscated in Gambling Raid

FROM THE LOWNDES COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT

On Wednesday February 5, 2014 Agents of the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department Narcotics Unit with the assistance of the Lowndes County Special Response Team, criminal investigations division, and uniform patrol division executed two search warrants in reference to illegal drugs and gambling. The two locations were 613 22 Street South and 2310 Washington Avenue in Columbus. As a result agents busted an illegal gambling ring where a game was actually in progress. Agents seized over $42,000.00 in cash that is suspected to be involved in gambling and narcotics trafficking.

Carolyn Harris, 59, of 2310 Washington Avenue was arrested and charged with illegal gambling and allowing the game of gambling to be conducted in her home. There were numerous additional arrests made at the home and the Sheriff’s Department is not releasing those names at this time.

This in an ongoing investigation into not only gambling, but narcotics trafficking and more arrests are to be expected as the investigation continues.

In an unrelated offense Agents with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department Narcotic’s Unit conducted a traffic stop in the Walmart parking lot on Monday February 3, 2014. This stop resulted in the arrest of Courtney Parks, 28, of Brooksville for possession of cocaine. At the time of his arrest Parks was armed with a Ruger 9mm pistol which was in his coat.

Parks was transported to the Lowndes County Detention Center where he was held until facing arraignment to set his bond.

In another unrelated offense Agents with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department Narcotic’s Unit and Deputies with the Sheriff’s Department Warrant Division conducted a traffic stop on Military Road near Lowes on Tuesday February 4, 2014. A search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of close to an ounce of marijuana and over $700.00 in cash. Deanthony Sykes, 26, of Columbus was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. Sykes was transported to the Lowndes County Detention Center where he was held until bond could be set.
