50 Years Later: Columbus Remembers D.C. March

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)- Hundreds of people came out Sunday afternoon to honor the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s I have a dream speech.

Several organizations and people in the community marched from the Columbus Riverwalk to the Trotter Convention Center.

The march was followed by a program inside the convention center.

Organizers and marchers wanted to remember and pay tribute to the sacrifices and journey people made within the civil rights movement.

“A part of our attempt with dream 365 is as we celebrate every year, we also educate the youth so that they would know where they came from and what the past has taught us and what we’ve come through,” says Pastor Tony Montgomery, Co-Founder of Dream 365.

Geneva Atkins marched with members of her organization, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Atkins says she cherished her Sunday marching and honoring our past.

“I’m honored to be a part of Dream 365. It only means that what Dr. King did 50 years ago made it possible for us myself to be where I am today in the community,” says Geneva Atkins.

More than 500 people marched and attended Sunday’s program. It comes after a week of celebrations by Dream 365. Monday, the celebration ends with a MLK Breakfast hosted by the NAACP.
