COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — A Columbus family is now telling their story of a daring rescue and aftermath of a literal trial by fire; now that the dust has settled and the smoke has cleared, from a major fire that for them, could have turned out another way.

The fire survivors of an October 2014 blaze at Jamestown Apartments in East Columbus are talking to anyone that will listen, about their ordeal. If you accept Shalonda Conner’s account of what happened when she woke to a burning apartment building around 2 a.m. that morning, you may believe like she does. There must have been the presence of an unseen fifth person in the home she shared with three daughters.

After rounding up her girls and breaking windows in an effort to escape the burning building, her oldest daughter De’ja, then 14, has no response.

“By the time I lifted De’ja up to get her to the window, is when the ladder hit their side of the window. Then that’s when I passed out,” said Shalonda Conner/Fire Survivor.

“We proceeded off the truck and grabbed the ladder and proceeded up the window. And we pulled out the two daughters and the mother. And then later on we found out that there was a fourth victim in which was, we sent another crew in and they got them out,” said Capt. Tommy Massey/Columbus Fire & Rescue.

Conner would later be told by Columbus Fire and Rescue just what happen inside her home, she blacked out.

“They got the two out first. My baby passed out, they had to do CPR on her. They took her to Baptist. I think they gave her treatment on site and she was fine. Well, they tried to pull me out, took a while for them to get me out. And they had to toss me because they couldn’t come in. They had to toss me to somebody waiting down below. I was wondering why I was so sore in the hospital. I had like a cracked rib,but yeah, that’s why,” said Shalonda Conner.

For the family, being rescued from a burning building that day would not be the end of their troubles. The mother and her oldest daughter are both unresponsive, as the heat of the blaze destroys their apartment, they both are left facing an uncertain future.

The two unconscious victims are taken to the hospital by ambulance. In part two of their story as told to R. H. Brown all is not well, we see the Conner family dealing with another unexpected trial.
