Aberdeen GED Changes

ABERDEEN, Miss. (WCBI) – Some Aberdeen residents are scrambling to finish a GED Program before new changes go into effect after December.

For the students chasing a dream of finishing up with their GED classes, time is running out. They stand a chance of maybe falling between the cracks of the unemployment crevice.

“We start with a new GED test in January of 2014. And if those students who have started their test have not completed all five sections they will lose those scores.

“I don’t know why I waited this long to take it, but you know I just want a little better possibility out of life,” said Rafael Randle, GED Student.

When pursuing a job in the past, Randle found himself stretching the truth about his education on the application. In the future that should change.

“Most of the times I lied on an application so I don’t know if they looked it up but this time I put it down when I get finished, I’m going to have it,” said Randle.

“One of the very first things that employers look at such as Tronox, Georgia Pacific, is do students have a GED or high school diploma,” added Brosky.

Another student, Angie Buckingham has three children. Her three year old son inspired her to pursue and further her education.

“I heard my son say I don’t like school, he is quitting. And I had to sit down and talk to him and let him know, don’t quit. I know its hard and its complicated and you get tired every day but don’t quit,” said Buckingham.

“It allows these students to enter college any college that they wish to enter as well as a better chance of getting a job in the job market today,” said Brosky.

Students completing their GED are entitled to one free college class at ICC. Buckingham wants to venture off into the area of after school child care.
