ABERDEEN, Miss. (WCBI) — Some residents in Aberdeen are kicking off the new school year.

On Monday night, members of the P-16 Council met for the first time this school year to discuss issues impacting the school district.

One topic emphasized is the need to improve student attendance.

“Our conservator, Mr. Curlee, is working with our attendance clerk, Jennifer Oliver, to set a policy in place for students that are chronically tardy, and check out early,” said Leigh Todd, Aberdeen Elementary School principal.  “It’s very important for a child to be at school 100 percent of the time in order for them to get a full education.”

Todd says they’re also working on attendance incentives for the kids.
