ABERDEEN, Miss. (WCBI) — Some Belle Elementary School students are getting a spooky take on learning this Halloween.

They designed and built a haunted pirate ship, to not only learn about the ocean, but scare their classmates at the same time.

“It was funny, ’cause I saw all my friends screaming like little girls,” said fifth grader Gloria Beasley.

The haunted shipwreck is part of a class lesson for some gifted sixth graders. They’re studying the sea, but with a spooky twist.

“We learned about the layers of the ocean, the midnight zone, twilight zone, things like that,” said sixth grader Niyah Lockett. “Then we go in, we go through a maze, and then we go through a crawl space , go through hallways, and then we get to the big scare with the octopus and the treasure.”

The students spent about a month planning the haunted pirate ship, and only a couple days actually building it.

“One of the things that we have to do in our class is performing arts, and creativity, so this also plays into those objectives that we’re working on,” said teacher Sheila Westbrook.

The students say it’s a fun bonus to be able to scare their peers. Many of them screamed. Some even cried.

“It was scarier this year, because we had more elements, bigger surprises,” Lockett said.

The students will design another haunted attraction for school next Halloween with a different theme.

The school also held a fall carnival for students, which included games and Halloween candy.
