ABERDEEN, Miss. (WCBI) – Aberdeen aldermen could decide as early as Tuesday if they want to let the public decide whether the city has an elected or hired police chief.

Two weeks ago, city leaders received an opinion from the state Attorney General suggesting the city should hold a referendum on the subject.

The opinion also said the city needed to make sure a petition calling for the public vote was properly certified and that it contained enough legitimate signatures from city voters.

Aldermen delayed any action for further review. That discussion could come when the board meets Tuesday night.

Last December, aldermen voted to start hiring the police chief when current Chief Henry Randle’s term runs out in 2016.

Randle protested and started the petition calling for the referendum.

The issue was tabled while the city sought the attorney general’s opinion.
