Accidents Claim Lives in Benton, Alcorn County

Benton County

The Mississippi Highway Patrol was busy Wednesday afternoon investigating two fatal crashes.

At 3:00pm, Troopers were dispatched to a one vehicle crash on MS 5, south of US 72, in Benton County. Upon arriving, it appeared James Godsey, 77, of Ashland, was traveling north on MS 5, when he apparently lost control of his 2004 Buick, left the roadway and collided into a tree.

His vehicle caught fire as a result of the collision.

Godsey died on the scene from injuries sustained during the crash.

Alcorn County

At 4:00pm, Troopers were dispatched to another fatal crash near King Kars on US 45, in Alcorn County, involving a cyclist. Upon arriving it appeared Joseph Demitro, 19, of Corinth, was riding a bicycle and attempted to cross US 45 when he apparently traveled into the path of a south bound 2011 International Semi-Tractor/Trailer. The tractor/trailer was operated by Mary Darden, 51, of Shannon.

Demitro died on the scene from injuries sustained during the crash.

Darden was uninjured in the crash.

Both crashes are still under investigation.
