LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — Golden Triangle Regional Airport is continuing to upgrade services to be ready when future expansion opportunities become available.

Airport Director Mike Hainsey said today a $3 million project to repave and seal taxiways will help protect the airport’s infrastructure for years to come.

He said the airport, like others across the country, is having to deal with contraction in the airline industry. But heavy business travel has helped GTR see steady growth in passenger counts the last four years.

“The biggest question we always get asked is new air service, is when are we going to get westbound service. The biggest problem we have right now is the airline that would most likely provide that…American Airlines is in the middle of a merger and just recently came out of bankruptcy so when they are ready to talk about it, so will we,” Hainsey told the Columbus Rotary Club today.

Hainsey also says the community needs to be gearing up to fight the next round of Base Realignment and Closure to protect Columbus Air Force Base in 2017.
