ALCORN COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — Two Alcorn County Regional Correctional Facility detainees’ few hours of freedom were short-lived.

Reports indicate 28-year-old murder suspect Sirdon Greer and 25-year-old rape suspect Garnett Hughes overpowered a security guard at the facility about 2:40 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

But their afternoon of freedom came to an abrupt end as law enforcement discovered then several hours later.

Further information on where exactly they were located was unavailable at the time of this posting, but according to the Daily Corinthian, Hughes was discovered within six miles of the facility.

Greer was arrested in connection to a double homicide that occurred Feb. 13, which left two brothers dead. After allegedly shooting brothers James and Jerry Copeland, Greer is suspected of burning the house to eliminate any evidence.

Hughes was arrested Aug. 25, 2013 in connection to a rape that occurred at Beechwood Circle in Corinth. The 12-year-old daughter of the rape victim phoned 911 while the man was still inside the residence. Authorities managed to detain him after he attempted to flee the scene by diving out of a window.

Greer’s bond was set at $1.2 million, Hughes’ bond was set at $500,000.
