Alwal Named SEC Defensive Player of the Year

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WCBI/SEC) — The Southeastern Conference announced its 2014 women’s basketball postseason awards Tuesday, highlighted by South Carolina’s Dawn Staley, Tiffany Mitchell and Alaina Coates being named Coach, Player and Freshman of the Year, respectively.

Mississippi State’s Martha Alwal and Texas A&M’s Jordan Jones were named Co-Defensive Players of the Year, while Coates and Kentucky’s Jennifer O’Neill were named Co-6th Player of the Year.  Missouri’s Lianna Doty was named Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

First-team and second-team All-SEC honorees, All-Freshman team, All-Defensive team, along with Player, Coach and Freshman, Defensive Player, 6th Player and Scholar-Athlete of the Year were chosen by the league’s 14 coaches. Ties were not broken.
