AMORY, Miss. (WCBI) — Amory may follow Tupelo’s four-year-old model in requiring more from rental property owners.

Like many other towns, Amory already is cracking down on overgrown lots, junk cars and dilapidated properties. But aldermen are considering going a step further by putting basic health and safety standards in place for landlords.

That could mean registration fees and regular inspections. The issue is protecting both property values and residents’ health.

“With regard to safety and health, primarily that is our goal. We want the property to be safe and healthy environment for people to live in,” Mayor Howard Boozer said.

Tupelo approved its first rental standards and inspections policy four years ago and revised it two years ago.

A draft of the Amory ordinance could be reviewed this summer.
