GRENADA, Miss. (Press Release) -– In Defense of Animals (IDA), the international animal protection organization that operates Hope Animal Sanctuary (HAS) in Grenada, Mississippi, rescued eight severely emaciated horses in Grenada County on Tuesday.

HAS received a report of several starving horses located in a small pasture on Dubard Road in Grenada County. HAS cruelty investigator, Doll Stanley, responded to the plea for help and found eight severely emaciated horses. Doll immediately sought and was granted a seizure order and, with the help of Mississippi Horse Rescue from Jackson and Dr. Tom Abernethy of Veterinary Associates in Grenada, began administering veterinary care and making plans to relocate the horses.

“This is a stellar example of organizations swiftly and effectively pooling their resources for the common goal of aiding imperiled animals. Individually we would not have had the space to house and resources to care for these horses, but with the help of our rescue partners we were able to act quickly and start these horses on the road to recovery,” said Director Stanley.

Horse rescue organizations in Mississippi are inundated with reports of neglected horses. The number of horses needing rescue far exceeds the resources of the few rescue groups who are able to respond.

Cruelty charges will not be filed against the guardians of these horses as they have declined to fight the seizure order.

Donations (either monetary, goods, or services) to help cover the costs of this investigation and seizure and ongoing animal rescue in Mississippi, are always needed and appreciated. Those wishing to donate may do so by sending donations to: Hope Animal Sanctuary, 52 County Road 241, Grenada, Miss. 38901 or by contacting Doll Stanley directly at 662-809-4483.
