STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)- Some Starkville middle school students have earned top honors on the state and national level for their work on history projects.

Eight Armstrong Middle School history buffs have a right to celebrate, as they bask in their abilities.

 They are quiz bowl champions.

They took top honors in the middle school division for the second year in a row.

Now six of their projects are being sent on to this Summer’s National History Fair in Washington, O.C.

“And we had one that did it on I Love Lucy. And he made it on women’s rights. And it was very interesting to read his paper. And it is so exciting to see students do the research that college students are doing at a junior high level,” said Josh Pankey, Armstrong History teacher.

The medals proudly worn around their necks are the result of having picked a topic from a theme given to them by the University of Maryland.

The students then created a paper, project, website, or performance.

“Mine is about America’s war against Tripoli. That’s in the marine fight song as most people know. Its actually a very interesting back story to how the navy started,” said Clay Turner, AMS Student.

Award winner Hannah King’s project helps us get into the mind of a serial killer.

“This year I did a group project. Like the first year I did national history day and its on criminal profiling and how it, criminal profiling is a tool that kind of catches criminals faster and more efficient,” said Hannah King, AMS Student.

“To write an historical research paper the minimum word limit is like 2,500 words. So you have to do a good bit of research. I went to the MSU Library and I found lot of different sources there. I reached out to different places like NASA and they sent me some resources,” said Bradley Curtis, AMS Sudent.

With the added info from NASA, Bradley Curtis’ project about JFK’s man on the moon speech, is helping the team to soar above others in the competitions.

“Just getting to compete with kids from all around the nation, its just a cool experience, added Curtis.

“Lots of people go all out on this. And its really fun to get to learn other things,” said King.

Armstrong Middle School students Hannah King, Clay Turner, and CiCi Zhang have participated in the National History Day competition for the last 3 years.
