Arrest May Solve Lowndes Burglaries

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — A burglar interrupted in the act may solve several break ins at Lowndes County camphouses.

At about 10 Late Tuesday night, the owner of property on John Smart Road found a 1996 Honda Accord stuck in the woods near his camphouse and called deputies after firing a warning shot.

Items taken from four camphouses in the area were located in the car and on the ground but a five-hour search turned up no suspects.

Information in the car led detectives to a home on Second Street South in Columbus Wednesday where more stolen items were recovered.

Willie Rainer, 19, was charged with burglary when he showed up during the search. Another man with him was released without any charges, but Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Marc Miley says the investigation continues and more arrests are expected.

Deputies think the items at the house were taken during previous burglaries at the camphouses, which are in southern Lowndes County near the Noxubee County line.
