Artists’ Renderings of New TPD Headquarters Approved

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — Ground could be broken for a new police headquarters in Tupelo by the end of the year.

Artists renderings have been approved for the new Tupelo Police Department headquarters.

Now, those plans must be submitted to cost estimators, who will help ensure the plans are within the $10 million budget approved for the headquarters.

The 33,000-square-foot facility will consolidate three out-of-date offices the TPD and administrators are working out of, and will include a basement for evidence storage, along with a state-of-the-art situation room.

There are already preliminary plans to put the old buildings to good use.

“The police building we are in now down on Front Street was built in 1966. We have been down there ever since then,” Tupelo Police Chief Bart Aguirre said. “The building has some problems. … After we move out, they are interested in moving our courts in over there.”

After the cost estimators approve plans for the new headquarters, the city will open the project up for bids.

That process takes at least 30 days.

Then, once a contract is awarded, construction can begin. it will take one year to 18 months to complete the headquarters.
