STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — Reading a book is an everyday part of class in every school across the country.

However, teachers say if a student is hungry, they don’t remember as much information.

Now, a program is packing all of its energy to help the kids.

Backpack Meals provides for students who aren’t being well fed over the weekend.

“We provide them with a meal bag that includes two meals for Saturday and two meals for Sunday, so that when they come back to school on Monday they will have been well fed over the weekend,” Backpack Meals Volunteer Susan Tomlinson said.

The program began three years ago. It helps over 120 students in grades pre-k through 8th.

The meals cost about $5, and are paid for by area organizations and grants.

Girl Scouts to senior citizens volunteer to help make sure the students have something to eat.

“Knowing they had something to eat makes me feel better,” Sudduth School Counselor Mary Ruth Caradine said. “I hate to think of anybody, especially our children, especially this age child, going without something to eat.”

Backpack Meals plans to provide over 3,000 meal packs to students this school year.
