Baptist Memorial Welcomes New Gastroenterologist to Staff

COLUMBUS, Miss. (Press Release) — Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle welcomes new gastroenterologist Richard Heard MD to its medical staff. Heard practices at Gastroenterology Associates of Columbus, P.A., Columbus Endoscopy Center, Inc.

Dr. Heard received a bachelor’s degree in microbiology, summa cum laude, from Mississippi State University. He is a graduate of the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson and completed his residency in internal medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis.

During his fellowship, Dr. Heard worked as a hospitalist at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo and as Medical Officer on Duty at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Memphis. He previously served as an American Medical Association Government Relations Intern in Washington, D.C. and as an intern in the White House.

Dr. Heard is currently a member of the American College of Gastroenterology and the Mississippi State Medical Association, and he is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

His many past honors include the Gold Humanism Honor Society at the University of Mississippi Medical Center; the Dr. Virginia Stansel Tolbert Award for Outstanding Leadership and Academic Achievement at the University of Mississippi Medical Center; and Student of the Year, Associated Student Body, University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Originally from Brooksville, Dr. Heard and his wife, Katie, live Columbus and have two children, Kirksey, 3, and Sam, 1.
