COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Exercise is an essential part of a healthy life, but traditional routines can get a little old after a while. What if you could pair the precision of pilates with the fun of a dance class? It turns out you can. Gently grasp the bar. Keep on those tippy toes, and feel your core strengthen as you let the music take control. Celeta Holzhauer is a bar pilates instructor.
She says, ” The main thing is, you are having fun while you are toning, tightening and strengthening your entire body.”
Bar Pilates have come to Columbus. Classes fill up quickly at the Fitness Factor. Instructor Marion McEwen explains, ” Well I just like the way it makes you feel. You feel wonderful when you leave. You’re working hard. It’s not so high intensity or high impact, but when you leave you know you’ve done something.”
Bar classes incorporate basic movements like squats and twists and others that have their origins ballet.
Marion says, ” Well we do plies, releves, tendus and battemats.”
I’d never heard of them either, but with the help of the class, I pulled them off, sort of. In five minutes the sweat was pouring. Typical classes last an hour. You can go at your own pace.
Celeta says, “We are going to go through all of the muscle groups and then at the end we are going to stretch our muscles so that you have an entire body workout. We get in our zen, get in our zone, and its actually meditational, when you leave you really feel refreshed.”
You’ll also find that your posture improves and your body feels properly aligned, but what about those unwanted pounds and inches?
Marion says, ” As women, that’s what important to us, is, you know, arms and legs and other areas that we like to tone. We want to make sure that our glutes are tight and our legs looks good, and this hits it all.”
So if you are looking to break out of your old routine, it might be time to hit the bar. Starting next Monday (7-8), the Fitness Factor will offer Bar Classes six days a week. You don’t have to be member of the gym to participate, but classes fill up fast, so you might want to call first.
