Barreto Dies In Prison

JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) — The Union County woman who spent time on the FBI’s 15 most wanted list has died in prison.

Janet Barreto, 43, died from natural causes just after nine Wednesday morning at the Central Mississippi Medical Center where she was serving a 29-year sentence for the manslaughter death of her 2-year-old adopted daughter.

Barretto and her husband Ramon became the subjects of a nationwide manhunt when they disappeared before reporting to prison. The couple remained on the run for five years before being captured in Oregon in August 2014.
